Food Find: Olympus Greek Yogurt

Much as I’ve tried to avoid getting sucked back in, Whole Foods has become a regular stop once again on my weekly grocery shopping circuit. As I browsed around looking for items on sale and items for which I had coupons, I came across Olympus Greek Yogurt, on sale 10 for $10 (reg. $1.99 each).

 After looking at some of the flavors, I ended up buying 8 of the nonfat plain cups. (I prefer to dress my yogurt up myself.) Not only was this a great deal (50% off the regular pirce!), but the nutritional stats are out of this world! Each 6 oz cup is just 88 calories, with only 7 g carbs and a whopping 15 g of protein! Score!

So the stats are great, but how did it taste??

I tasted a bit of the yogurt on it’s own and found it to be much less tangy than other plain Greek yogurts I’ve tried (and believe me, I’ve tried a lot of them!). Then I dressed it up in typical HFM fashion: chocolate-mousse style.

Mixed with 1 Tbs cocoa powder, 1 packet of stevia, and some sliced banana

This was sooo incredibly creamy! It reminded me a lot of Oikos in it’s texture, but Oikos is much more tangy. I can’t wait to use this in overnight oats! It’s taking a lot of willpower not to go grab another one out of the fridge right now! This was by far my best food find in a while. It’s a shame that it is regularly $1.99 per cup. Much like Oikos and Voskos, it just doesn’t fit into my budget. I’m still at the point in my life where I’m a slave to prices… Thus, I will have to stick with my Chobani, which is just $1.25 per cup. At least the Olympus yogurt is on sale until Oct. 5 at WF! 🙂

Oh-oh-overnight Oats!

Just popping in quickly to share my overnight oats success! 🙂

Over the past couple months, I’ve dabbled with overnight oats. I first tried them out of taste and texture curiosity. But now, when I make them, it’s more for time-saving reasons. The other few times that I’ve made overnight oats, I’ve used regular plain yogurt. While the oats weren’t horrible, they weren’t fabulous. It left me wondering what all the hype was about. They were just ok.

Well – I think I’ve found the secret. You must, must, must use Greek yogurt!!

Knowing I was getting up early this morning for a workout, I prepped my breakfast last night. Into the bowl went:

  • 1 mashed banana
  • 1/2 cup of old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup of almond milk
  • 1 container of plain Oikos [I typically buy Chobani, but I had a store coupon for Oikos. I forgot how amazingly creamy Oikos is! It’s a shame it’s so much more expensive…]
  • 1 tbs of raisins
  • cinnamon
  • vanilla
  • 1 packet of stevia
  • 2 tbs of walnuts (added in the morning)

It may not look very pretty, but it tasted phenomenal!

 This was so creamy and delicious! I didn’t heat it up at all; just ate it right out of the fridge. I was trying my hardest not to inhale the whole bowl all at once! I highly recommend this combo, if you haven’t tried it.

I do have a little confession though – I ate my breakfast in the bathroom, by the sink, while I put on my makeup! Always multi-tasking!

Quick Check In – Computer Down

Hey all! Hope you had a great Thursday and Friday. I’m having some issues with my laptop so I’m just doing a quick post for now from the in-laws’ computer. Hopefully I’ll be back with pictures soon!

THURSDAY

Breakfast –  Big bowl of oats(3/4 cup of oatmeal, 1 small banana, 2 tbs ground flaxseed, cinnamon, vanilla, raisins, and 1 tbs of almond butter on top), and scrambled eggs (1/2 cup of egg whites + 1 whole egg)

Lunch – New favorite wrap: turkey with roasted red pepper hummus, lettuce, and hot sauce; plain Oikos mixed with cocoa powder and Stevia.

Snacks – Fiber One with soymilk; Chocolate Coconut Chew Larabar; small apple

Dinner – Baked chicken with green beans and a glass of red wine

Fitness – 35 minutes Spinning

FRIDAY

Breakfast – 1 cup of Fiber One with raisins, almonds, banana,  walnuts, and 1/2 cup of soymilk; scrambled eggs (1/2 cup of egg whites +1 whole egg)

Morning Snack – plain Oikos with Stevia and cocoa powder

Lunch – Ruby Tuesday salad bar

Afternoon Snacks – small banana with almond butter; 1 slice of French Meadow Bakery Women’s Bread

Dinner – Grilled chicken with balsamic zucchini/red onion/tomatoes done in foil packets on the grill

Fitness – Biggest Loser Bootcamp

I just ordered a new workout DVD tonight – Biggest Loser Power Sculpt. I’ve been doing the Bootcamp for way too long – about 2 months or more. I’m getting so bored with it, which I think is part of why I’ve been lacking workout motivation lately.

Back to Basics

Happy Tuesday! I hope you all had a great day. It was a muggy one here in New Hampshire!

Baby woke up around 6:15 as usual this morning. Instead of getting up for the day, I got baby and snuggled her in bed with me and we both went back to sleep until 7:15.

I was looking forward to some almond butter for breakfast when I finally got up! I had 2 slices of sprouted grain toast with almond butter and banana along with 1/2 cup of egg whites + 1 whole egg, scrambled, and a small glass of light vanilla soymilk.

While I was cooking my eggs, I also munched on 2 dates stuffed with AB and the other half of my banana.

The hubby and I took baby out to run some errands around 11. Before we left, I had a snack to tide me over until lunch – plain Chobani with Stevia and cocoa powder.

We got home around 12:30 and I fixed myself some lunch – turkey, lettuce, and roasted red pepper hummus on a La Tortilla Factory whole wheat tortilla.

I spent the afternoon napping (yeah!), making baby food, and snacking.

(I stopped at the store and got a big container of Oikos today because I had a store coupon for $1.00 off. Hooray for coupons! :-D)

Snack #2 (no picture): handfuls of Fiber One and a small apple.

For dinner tonight, my mother-in-law treated us to Chinese food. I love Chinese, but I hate feeling weighed down by the greasiness of it. So I ordered from the “Health Food Selections” section of the menu – steamed chicken and mixed vegetables with sauce on the side. I just drizzled a little of the sauce over my meal. That’s really all you need! I ended up eating the whole container of veggies. There really wasn’t much chicken at all. It was very yummy though!

About an hour after dinner, it was time for a cardio workout. I’m feeling a little burnt out on Spinning, so tonight I went back to basics and did some old fashioned calisthenics. For 50 minutes, I did circuits that including jumping jacks, running in place, jumping rope, punches, crunches, and dancing! It was a bit disorganized, but the important thing was that I didn’t stop moving for the whole 50 minutes.

What foods have you recently discovered that you can’t live without now??

My recently discovered faves are oat bran, almond butter, and Greek yogurt. I eat at least one of these foods (and often all of them) every day. Seriously, how did I get by before I discovered these?! 😉

The Usual Saturday Routine

Today was the usual Saturday routine – Target and the grocery store. Let me back up to breakfast first…

I was up around 6 and ready for food! I made myself a yummy bowl of oat bran and a plate of scrambled eggs.

1/2 cup of oat bran, 1-1/4 cups of water, 2 tbs of ground flaxseed, cinnamon, vanilla, banana (1/2 mashed, 1/2 sliced on top), raisins, and 1 tbs of almond butter

I also had 2 cups of decaf coffee. (This is a standard part of my breakfast that I typically forget to mention.)

After I got myself and baby put together, we headed out for some lunch and some shopping. I ate an apple in the car on our way.

My aunt had given us a gift card last weekend for Chili’s so we went there for lunch. Not the most nutritious place to eat, but at least they offer some healthier options. I went with the Guiltless Grilled Chicken Sandwich with a side of steamed broccoli, and a side salad with vinegar. (No picture.) The sandwich was better than expected and had pretty good nutritional stats – 360 cals, 5g fat, 36 g protein, 44 g carbs.

While we were shopping, I picked up some plain Chobani yogurt to try. I had planned to buy more Oikos, but I opted for the Chobani because it was cheaper – just 99 cents per 6 oz cup. I decided to try one for an afternoon snack, mixed with my usual Stevia and cocoa powder.

The verdict: it was good. It was creamier than Oikos and less tangy, which I liked. But it wasn’t as thick as Oikos, which I didn’t like. I’ll probably buy this again though since it is cheaper. I do love the 18g of protein too!

We spent the late afternoon over at my dad’s house where I nibbled a few crackers and enjoyed a small vodka tonic.

We didn’t get home until 5:30 and I still had to feed and bathe baby before putting her to bed. I was surprisingly not that hungry, so I made a simple turkey wrap with mustard for dinner. I also had a few blueberries.

Around 7, I headed to the basement for Biggest Loser Bootcamp. I think I’m finally coming out of my exercise funk. I really felt like I gave it my all tonight.

The hubby is out at a friend’s party tonight so I’m here by myself with my sleeping baby. I’m going to take a long, hot shower, do a little reading, and turn in early. The perfect Saturday night for a new mommy! 😀

*Quick Product Review: I liked the chocolate NutriBiotic powder blended with banana. The chocolate flavor wasn’t too strong and it wasn’t chalky since I took the time to blend it.

*Quick Product Review: This was my first taste of strawberry Oikos. YUMMY!!! It wasn’t overly sweet, yet wasn’t tangy, like the plain. It had a really nice flavor. I will definitely buy this again!

Turkey burgers and veggies

My turkey burgers contained some oats, dried minced garlic, salt, pepper, and chives. The veggies were done in foil packets on the grill – zucchini, tomato, and red onion with balsamic vinegar.

Throughout the afternoon, I also had a few handfuls of cereal, a date or two, and a couple other nibbles.

FITNESS

  • 15-minute walk (cut short due to mosquitos!)
  • 40-minutes Spinning

I’ll be back tomorrow with a chattier post. Off to shower, read, and then hopefully catch a few extra zzz’s tonight!!

Hi, I’m Emily and I’m Addicted to Almond Butter!

Since I bagged out on my exercise last night, I decided that, rather than sit in front of the TV, I should go to bed early and hope that baby allowed me to get some sleep. I was in bedreading by 8:30; asleep by 9:30. Sooo glad I turned in early. Baby only got up once, too, so mama is much more rested today!

I had a one track mind when I woke up this morning at 6 – almond butter!!!! I cannot believe that just a couple months ago I hadn’t even tried it before…and just 2 weeks ago I bought my first jar! Seriously, this stuff is like crack for me! I want to put it on everything.

For breakfast, I had 2 slices of sprouted grain toast with crack almond butter and banana, and scrambled egg/egg whites.

I may or may not have dipped a spoon into the AB jar before and after my breakfast. 😉

Believe it or not, a half hour after breakfast I was still kind of hungry so I had one of my other new faves:

It was a gorgeous day, so I headed to Keene, NH to spend the day walking around in town with my mom and baby. (I ate an apple in the car on the way.)

While we were out, I stopped into a natural foods store and grabbed a couple things. I also treated my mom to some lunch. We both had mixed greens salads with grilled chicken, ham, egg, and dill dressing. I also had a fresh apricot. I had my camera, but forgot to snap a pic. Lunch was good, but not very filling. There was the tiniest portion of chicken and ham on it. Bummer, especially since the salad cost $10!

By the time I got home, I was ravenous. I had a couple snacks:

1) Fiber One with almond milk

2) A protein shake made with almond milk and some NutriBiotic Vanilla Rice Protein Powder that I picked up at the store today.

Baby was napping, so I didn’t want to run the blender. Instead, I stirred the powder in with a spoon. It was a bit chalky, and the taste was just ok. I probably would have liked it better blended with banana. Then again, I’d probably eat or drink anything blended with banana!

Obviously I had to work some of it into my dinner!

I decided to grill some lemon pepper chicken with some zucchini rounds. I put the zucchini into foil packets with some olive oil.

I sprinkled some chives over the zucchini when it was done. Soooo yummy!

After dinner, I got my butt in gear and did the entire Biggest Loser Bootcamp DVD. I still don’t think I gave it 100% tonight, but at least I did it!

Yesterday I bought a new book (only because I had a gift certificate for this little bookstore that I’ve been hanging onto for 3 years!). It’s called Waistland: The (R)Evolutionary Science Behind Our Weight and Fitness Crisis. I’m a couple chapters in and it is quite interesting. I’ll give a full review when I finish it.

Besides exercising, reading health/nutrition books is my favorite hobby. I like to take pieces from each one to incorporate into my lifestyle, rather than following a specific “diet.”
